Issues and Problems

World Development Indicators (WDI) database is an extensive and holistic compilation of data by the World Bank on global development. It covers more than 10 topics and 1,300 time series development indicators featuring 214 nations and around 30 country groups.

The challenge is to create a holistic visual dashboard to allow students, policymakers, analysts and officials to perform proper analyse and provide insights out of the data presented. Most of the WDI data are represented in the form of geospatial map rendered using a single development indicator, which is normally unable to provide a complete insight of the focused topic.

Therefore, the team is driven to explore the various visualization tools and techniques to provide a holistic view of the WDI database using a single visual graph.

Motivation and Objectives

We hope to study the development of gender rights across time and countries, identify countries with gender inequality, and observe correlations (if any) between gender equality and development of a country. The project objective is to to identify Gender discrimination (if any) across countries over the following six area of focus:

• Agency - Contraceptives, Legislation, Genital Mutilation, etc.
• Economic and Social Context - Life Expectancy, Consumer Prices, etc.
• Economic Opportunities - Employment, Labour Force Percentage, etc.
• Education - Graduation, Enrollment, etc.
• Health - Mortality Rate, Smoking, Immunization, etc.
• Public Life and Decision Making - Firms with top female managers, Decision making in the household, etc.
