Background

The pace of economic change in China has been extremely rapid since the start of economic reforms just over 25 years ago. According to official statistics, economic growth has averaged 9.5% over the past two decades and seems likely to continue at that pace for some time. National income has been doubling every eight years. Such an increase in output represents one of the most sustained and rapid economic transformations seen in the world economy in the past 50 years. However, China’s economy has entered a critical phase. There have been ups and downs in China’s economy landscape over the past recent years. To understand how China economy landscape changes is very necessary, particularly for long term investments.

Motivation & Purpose

China has become an attractive place for foreign capital. However, there is no such application that allows interested audiences to interactively gain a whole picture of China’s economy in great details. Data about China’s economy can be easily found from various websites. What our project intends to do is to put all these data together and build an application that can display and discover interesting patterns about China’s economy using appropriate data visualization techniques.

Target Audience

This web application serves as a decision-making reference wherever China’s economy situation should be considered, such as foreign companies or individuals who are looking for opportunities to invest in China. This web application can also be useful for new agencies or economy research institutions who are interested in understanding China’s economy.

Methodology

This application takes up the part whole method where we will first look into the overall economy growth, such as GDP performance and then investigate various key economy indicators such as income, property market and stock market. What’s more, we will also look at dataset of province level to gain a more granular view of China’s economy.
