The City of New York is the most populous city in the United States with an estimated population of 8,537,673 in 2016, distributed over a land area of about 302.6 square miles (784 km2). It is also the most densely populated major city in the United States. Due to the headquarters of the United Nations in New York, it is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural, financial, and media capital of the world. Yellow taxi in motion

Due to this there is huge network of taxis for better commutation of passengers from one place to another with ease, comfort, luxury and most importantly time saving.[1]
Yellow Medallion Taxicabs are one of the icon to New York City. There are currently over 13,000 licensed taxicabs and over 50,000 taxicab drivers providing transportation for passengers in all five boroughs (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, Staten Island) via street hails. Medallion taxicab are owned by private companies but licensed by Newyork City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC).[2]
These taxis are driven at an average of 180 miles per shift. Evening hours are typically more lucrative. Medallion Taxis make between 300,000 and 400,000 trips a day. The morning shift typically begins at 6:30 a.m., and the evening shift often starts at 5:15 p.m.; trips peak Friday evenings.[3][4]

Motivation

Through this project we are trying to visualize the position of the yellow taxis in New York by answering few questions that come up in our mind, such as:

  1. How did the taxi activity change during the first six months of 2016, as the competition with ride sharing companies increased?
  2. What is the average cost of a taxi trip in fares, tolls and taxes?
  3. Where are the most taxis hailed (pick up and drop off points) in New York?
  4. Can we see any unusual patterns which are worth deep diving?
